UniProt Number:

Q9NR28
Alternate Names:
Second mitochondria-derived activator of caspase, DIABLO, Direct IAP-binding protein with low pI
Structure and Function:
SMAC (second mitochondrial derived activator of caspases), also called DIABLO (direct IAP-binding protein with low pI), often called Smac/DIABLO, is an inhibitor of a class of proteins involved in cell death called the IAPs or inhibitor of apoptosis proteins. Smac/DIABLO induced ubiquitinylation and subsequent degredation of c-IAP1 and c-IAP2. It is localized to mitochondria in dividing cells and released to the cytosol as an early step in mitochondrially triggered apoptosis
