Structure and Function: This iron-sulfur protein is a component of succinate dehydrogenase. SDH is the subunit that transfers electrons from succinate to coenzyme Q in complex II of the respiratory chain.
Disease Associations: Defects of the iron-sulfur protein of succinate dehydrogenase are associated with pheochromocytoma, hereditary pragangliomas type 4 (PLG4), and Carney-Stratakis syndrome. Pheochromocytoma is a pathology that causes chromaffin tumors in the medulla (90%) or in the extra-adrenal sympathetic ganglia (10%), resulting in hypertension. PLG4 is a pathology that results in the slow development of mainly benign tumors that prefer vascular areas of the head and neck such as the carotid body. Carney-Stratkis syndrome is inherited as a heterozygous dominant condition and is characterized by gastrointestinal stromal tumors and paraganliomas.

Figure 1. Isolated mitochondria from human heart (lane 1), bovine heart (lane 2), rat heart (lane 3), mouse heart (lane 4), and HepG2 (lane 5) detected with (MS203) anti-30kDa Ip antibody. Extra bands in the mouse sample (lane 4) are due to the reaction of the IgG-specific goat anti-mouse secondary antibody with residual mouse blood in the heart tissue, as it is very difficult to entirely remove the blood from these small organs.
