RSK1p90

UniProt Number: Q13131
Alternate Names: 90 kDa ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1, MAP kinase-activated protein kinase 1a, Ribosomal S6 kinase 1
Structure and Function: RSK1p90 is a 90kDa ribosomal S6 kinase that belongs to a family of serine and threonine kinases. These kinases include a binding site for extracellular signal-related kinases (ERKs) at its carboxy-terminus. RSK1p90 is a 90kDa ribosomal S6 kinase that belongs to a family of serine and threonine kinases. These kinases include a binding site for extracellular signal-related kinases (ERKs) at its carboxy-terminus. Several residues including Thr359, Ser363, Ser380, and Thr573 are key in downstream kinase activation pathways. In response to many growth factors, neurotransmitters, and hormones, RSK1p90 is activated through phosphorylation by MAPK, PI3K and by autophosphorylation. Upon phosphorylation at Ser380, PDK1 phosphorylates Ser221, resulting in full activation of RSK1p90. This pathway is known for promoting cell growth, regulating apoptosis, chemotherapeutic drug resistance, and cellular senescence.
