Structure and Function: ATPsynthase (complex V) is responsible for catalyzing the formation of ATP from ADP and Pi using energy from the proton concentration gradient created by preceding complexes of the respiratory chain. The two main components of this complex are F1 and F0, which are responsible for catalysis and transmembrane proton transport respectively. The alpha and beta subunits make up the catalytic core (F1) of ATPsynthase.

Figure 1. Isolated mitochondria from human heart (lane 1), bovine heart (lane 2), rat heart (lane 3), and mouse heart (lane 4) detected with (MS503) anti-beta antibody. Extra bands in the mouse sample (lane 4) are due to the reaction of the IgG-specific goat anti-mouse secondary antibody with residual mouse blood in the heart tissue, as it is very difficult to entirely remove the blood from these small organs.

Cultured human fibroblasts were fixed, permeabilized and then labeled with MS503 followed by an AlexaFluor® 488-conjugated-goat-anti-mouse IgG1 isotype specific secondary antibody (2 µg/ml).
